Fallmount was a light frigate, with a 400 ton displacement, 40 guns and a crew of 250 men.
It was part of the fleet that supported the British invasion of the River Plate. This ship was intended to support the troops who tried to take the city of Pando, so that they could arrive at Montevideo using the Camino Real.
The operation failed because the Captain of the Blandengues,
José G. Artigas, with the cooperation of the local people, managed to
convince them to try to reach Pando by sailing up the Pando stream. The Fallmount
struck one of the numerous sandbanks, and Artigas used this opportunity to attack
them from the beach. The British, realizing that the ship was lost, destroyed
it in order to prevent it from being taken by the Spanish.
