This was one of the biggest corsair ships to fly the Artigas flag. It weighted 480 tons, had a crew of 180 men and was armed with 20 cannons, fourteen 24-pound cannons, and six 12-pound cannons.
A corsair is a naval unit that, motivated by the prospect of gains, offers its services to one belligerent party in a conflict. After being authorized by a "corsair patent", it cruises the seas, following and attacking both merchant and military fleets, confiscating cargoes and taking possession of the ships.
When war broke out between Portugal and Artigas, Artigas had no navy and no resources but, by using corsairs, he was able to create a fleet without compromising his territory and his sovereignty. In this way he reclaimed the right of the people of the Banda Oriental to attack and destroy their powerful maritime enemy.
